We have tens of millions of users that rely on AdBlock to block ads, remove distractions, and make the web enjoyable again. It’s easy to see why: ten years after the introduction of AdBlock, users are still bombarded with ads that flash, play sound, interrupt videos, follow you around the web, and worse. It can make visiting a website feel like a chore.
Which is why we’re excited to introduce AdBlock Premium (available in Chrome, Firefox, and the new Edge browser). While our primary focus remains blocking ads— a never-ending task, especially as websites seek new ways to get around AdBlock — we built AdBlock Premium to make the internet a little more enjoyable. We spent a good portion of 2019 building these features: from allowing you to replace ads with images of cats, dogs, and landscapes, to giving you the ability to export your ad blocking settings to all of your Chrome, Edge, and Firefox profiles and across different machines.
We’re also using AdBlock Premium as a way to experiment with a new business model. Since 2009, the overwhelming majority of users use AdBlock for free. And that’s great! We want users to access ad blocking for free, since many people can’t afford to pay to use AdBlock. With Premium, we’ll provide additional features on top of our existing ad blocking in exchange for $1 monthly or $10 annually. The revenue we generate from Premium will support our small team and allow us to continue doing what we love: investing in tools that make browsing the web safe, enjoyable, and distraction-free.
Of course, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of users who did donate over the years. And that’s why we are offering free access to Premium features to anyone that’s donated to AdBlock at any point over the last ten years. To unlock your free access just click on the “New” button in the AdBlock pop-up menu and then follow the instructions under the Upgrade Now button for users that have donated to AdBlock before.
The key features of AdBlock Premium include:
- Backup & Sync: Many AdBlock users have created website-specific rules to determine which ads are blocked, and which ads they choose to allow. This includes hundreds of thousands of people who have whitelisted YouTube channels they want to support. With Backup & Sync, users can save these custom rules and apply them across all of their Chrome profiles.
- Image Swap: If you’ve been using AdBlock for awhile, you may remember CatBlock. It started as an April Fool’s joke that became wildly popular. (Spoiler alert: the internet loves cats.) With Image Swap, we’ve given users the ability to occasionally replace blocked ads with an image of cats, dogs, or a beautiful landscape to make their favorite websites easier on the eyes.
- Custom Themes: We started with Dark Mode earlier this year. And now we’ve rolled out an additional six themes to allow you to personalize the look and feel of the AdBlock pop-up menu, as well as two new themes for the AdBlock Options page.
To install AdBlock Premium, start by installing AdBlock, then visit the AdBlock Premium enrollment page to get started. Please let us know what you think! And if you run into any issues, visit our support site to find answers to frequently asked questions and solutions for common problems.
